Javon Johnson of Tyler Perry's "The Oval" Fame Joins Dr. April K as Co-Producer of "Beneath The Crown: A Survivor's Story"

Spartanburg, SCFebruary 26, 2024 – Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, February 27th, the stage will be set ablaze as Javon Johnson, known for his work in Tyler Perry’s “The Oval,” joins forces with acclaimed actress and survivor Dr. April K as co-producer of the groundbreaking one-woman stage play, “Beneath The Crown: A Survivor’s Story.” He has partnered with Indy Brennan to produce the show.  The event will take place at the Olin B. Stansbury Jr. Life Center, located at the University of South Carolina Upstate campus, at 7:30 PM.

“Beneath The Crown” is a visceral reflection from the heart and mind of a sexual violence and domestic abuse survivor, Dr. April K. It delves deep into the complexities of trauma and triumph, offering audiences a raw and unfiltered portrayal of resilience and hope.

While Javon Johnson is no stranger to the stage, having starred in plays such as “Sanctified” and “When Love Calls,” Dr. April K’s “Beneath The Crown: A Survivor’s Story” presents a unique and daring performance that broaches sensitive and daunting subject matter with unparalleled courage.

Dr. April K’s journey from trauma to triumph serves as the cornerstone of this powerful production. Despite enduring unspeakable hardships, she has emerged as a successful professional and advocate, exemplifying the resilience and strength of the human spirit. Today, she holds pivotal roles as the film coordinator for Fulton Films in Atlanta, Georgia, and as the Southeastern Regional DV Coordinator for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and the Global DV Coordinator for Beauty For Ashes Women’s Ministry.

Javon Johnson, a native of Anderson, South Carolina, shares a special bond with Dr. April K, who is also from Anderson. Their collaboration on this project is deeply personal, as Dr. April K’s parents are Johnson’s godparents, and he used to babysit her as a child. Together, they have embarked on numerous film and stage projects, driven by their shared passion for storytelling and advocacy.

In anticipation of the event, Javon Johnson shared his thoughts: “This project is near and dear to my heart because Dr. April K is like a little sister who I have encouraged to speak out against the wrongs she has experienced. She is an inspiration to men and women struggling with adversity and a living testament to the power of God. This play is moving and motivating. It’s a must-see.”

Students of USC Upstate will have the unique opportunity to experience the play firsthand and meet Javon Johnson and Dr. April K at the event. Tickets are available for purchase at www.draprilk.com.
