Hometown Hero Returns: Anderson Native Dr. April K Brings Powerful One-Woman Play "Beneath The Crown: A Survivor's Story" to Electric City Playhouse

ANDERSON, SC (March 1, 2024) – Acclaimed playwright, film coordinator, and domestic violence advocate Dr. April K returns to her hometown this Easter Weekend to present her powerful one-woman play, “Beneath the Crown: A Survivor’s Story.” The performance will take place at the historic Electric City Playhouse on Friday, March 29th, at 7:00 PM and is co-produced by fellow Anderson native Javon Johnson, known for his work on Tyler Perry’s “The Oval,” and author N.D. “Indy” Brennan.

This timely show coincides with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, one of the key themes of the play. Dr. April K, herself a survivor of both sexual violence and domestic abuse, masterfully shares her harrowing story of profound pain and extraordinary triumph. “Beneath the Crown” is a heartbreaking and inspiring exploration of the human spirit’s incredible resilience, written and performed by Dr. April K herself.

“I’m elated to bring this impactful story back to my hometown,” says Dr. April K. “Anderson helped shape who I am, and it’s an honor to share my journey of healing and hope with the community that raised me.”

The performance will be hosted by Sheba Foxx, former personality on 107.3 JAMZ radio. A proud alumna of Anderson’s Westside High School and South Carolina’s HBCU Benedict College, Dr. April K exemplifies the hometown success story. Beyond her role in the Atlanta-based Fulton Films, she is the Southeastern Regional Coordinator for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and the Global Domestic Violence Coordinator for Beauty For Ashes Women’s Ministry.  As a respected pillar of the Anderson community, she is the daughter of Connie and Rev. Wayne Kelley, owners of Kelley Cleaning Service.

“Dr. April K is an inspiration to us all,” says co-producer Javon Johnson. “Her work not only entertains, but it empowers and gives a voice to countless survivors.”

In a spirit of community and support, the performance will feature a special audience participation element. All attendees are encouraged to bring one new, unopened toiletry item that will be donated to local organizations supporting women’s shelters and survivors. Common items needed include shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products.
