Emotional Triumph: Dr. April K's "Beneath The Crown: A Survivor's Story" Captivates Audience at USC Upstate

Spartanburg, South Carolina, February 28, 2023Last night, the Olin B. Stansbury Jr. Life Center at USC Upstate was filled with raw emotion and profound storytelling as Dr. April K’s one-woman play, “Beneath The Crown: A Survivor’s Story,” took center stage. The powerful performance, produced by Javon Johnson and Author N. D. “Indy” Brennan for K4 Entertainment, MADDCity Media Group, and JJP, left a lasting impact on attendees, emphasizing the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

The evening began with an enchanting performance by saxophone phenom Michael Miles, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience. Former 107.3 radio host Sheba Foxx, serving as the show’s host, expertly guided the audience through the evening’s events with humor and attention to detail.

As the anticipation grew, Dr. April K graced the stage, opening her performance with Destiny’s Child song “Survivor”,  a poignant homage to the struggles faced by trauma survivors. With masterful storytelling, she skillfully navigated the audience through a tapestry of past traumas, evoking both tears and applause from the captivated audience.

Standing at a petite 4’10”, Dr. April K’s presence exuded strength and vulnerability, resonating deeply with attendees. Her performance, supported by soul-stirring songs, led the audience on a journey of highs and lows, culminating in a sense of empowerment and triumph over adversity.

The show concluded with co-producer Javon Johnson of Tyler Perry’s “The Oval” fame facilitating a Q&A session with Dr. April K, Sheba Foxx, and other guests, providing further insight into the profound impact of the performance.

In a word, the show was described as “phenomenal” by attendees, with emphasis placed on its relevance for survivors of trauma. Sponsors, including Kelley Cleaning Service of Anderson, SC, the Gamma Mu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated in Spartanburg, and Big Frog Custom T-Shirts of Dunwoody, GA, generously supported the event, and donations were collected and presented to Dr. Tierney Bates, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs of USC Upstate, in support of their initiative to help local women survivors.
